Cooling Options for PS3 Slim

Heroes,

I've been doing a lot more gaming lately resulting in using the PS3 for several hours without a shutdown/cool-off. I'm growing concerned with the fact that my PS3 slim is now approaching 2 years old, and I'm experiencing slow downs at times. My Slim is still under warranty for 2 more years but I want to try to keep it as "healthy" as possible through preventative maintenance.

Typically I have a fan running and aimed at the front of the PS3 slim (for the intake). I keep my Slim on a wooden stand in an open environment. However, the back of my Slim still feels really warm to the touch as well as when I take out a game after several hours of playing it.

I've been considering buying a "laptop cooling-pad" to set my PS3 on top of. Does anyone else do this? I've seen some that have dual-fans, usb powered, and large enough for $15-$20 (US).

Does anyone recommend any specific brand/type? Am I worried about nothing?

I never thought about cooling by PS3 (slim). And I played it for whole weekends, using it as Blu Ray player afterwards and live in a relatively "hot" apartment.

I wouldn't buy such a cooler-thing.

I've bought a vertical pedestial with fan from Logic3.

But primary for a secure position rather than cooling.

Well, i don't have any cooling issues with mine, but had some with a short-lived PS3 60GB.

All things being equal, common sense tends to work better than 'gadgets' when it comes to keeping equipment cool. In the case of consoles, i favour the same common sense that you use for STBS - put em in a good airspace (a good couple of feet worth of empty surrounding air space for the box alone is a good place to start.

So given it's not having to 'cool' off the pre-warmed air vented by VCR's, STBS etc, and assuming the cooling ducts on the PS3 are clear (and also assuming the internal ducting aint got seriously clogged) and assuming the reason your PS3 runs hot aint down to an internal cooler prob/heatsink issue, then giving it a good bit of clean room temp air should be enough unless you really hammer the unit usage wise. If a few hours use (or seriously less) tends to get the console v.hot or it shuts down (or is in danger of) - then a external cooler is a bit like patching something together with sticky plasters - it can work, but not necessarily dealing the the cause - which should be the root thing to discover first before trying to fix the prob.

A bit of extra cooling is ok, may work, but if the reason for the hot running isn't down to a lack of ability to vent (i.e. surrounding air is too hot to let convention occur properly) - then it's just not gonna do a whole lot to add a cooler. It's a bit of a 'sticky plaster' attempt that may or may not work.

Before spending money, try borrowing a desk fan (one of those mains driven ones, not a wimpy DC thingy). Set it up onto it's cool setting (which is usually it's fastest setting) and set it up stationary blowing air straight into the cooling space around the PS3.

If that makes any difference at all, then some kind of forced cooling and/or improvement in the positioning of the console to improve the natural convention will do something.

Dunno if any of that helps, but worth a try before spending money out on a potentially useless (for your particular purpose) cooler.
